Current music:The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - "Fishin' in the Dark"

a musical circle. seriously.
okay, so i guess it's no secret (inasmuch as i mentioned it in a post once, anyway) that i am a nitty gritty dirt band fan (well, i own one song. two now. moving on). before you start getting all humphy, they're not hick, or really even country (and not that country always has to be a bad thing)! they're from california, they were the ones to bridge the gap between folk rock and country rock, jackson browne got his start singing with them, and were it not for them, a lot of what y'all listen to wouldn't even exist.

moving on.

so at karaoke last week, one of the songs sung was this "fishin' in the dark" and granted me and melvin* added a little something to the chorus with a cleverly-synced (and thoughtfully-provided-by-the-management) tambourine duet, but still, it was a pretty awesome song.

so i went to itunes to find it. and i found it, but i also found out that i know more than just that song and the other one i owned too, cuz they've got a song (apparently it's a huge hit, what do i know from alt-folk) called "will the circle be unbroken" that i don't know. but, i do know the awesome mojo nixon song, "will the fetus be aborted", which is essentially... well, no, not even essentially - it is the same song.

just, you know, different lyrics.

unbroken circle indeed.

*or possibly conrad. irving? one of those names that asian parents give their first-generation kids, anyway, that's always distinctly american, but off in popularity by at least forty years.

I'm just going to hug you now, for calling "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" alt-country, and for calling it a Nitty Gritty Dirt Band song.

or, well, it's alt-folk, at any rate.

Sorry, I misquoted you, you said alt-folk not alt-country.

But it's from at least the 1930s. The most famous version is by the Carter Family. It's about as old school and traditional as you can get short of Amazing Grace.

and here i was, thinking that the version i (sort of) knew was the original. at least i was only 30 years off though, so, you know... it could have been worse? ;p

Given my pretty catholic tastes in music, I don't mock anyone's musical choices, at least, not seriously.

catholic as in strident and wholesome, or catholic as in, like, hymns?
